Bapu Sabhagar Patna

project Description

The project involves the fabrication and erection of a large-scale structural steel framework for the Bapu Sabhagar Auditorium in Patna.

The facility is designed to accommodate large-scale conferences, and the scope of work includes the fabrication & erection of approximately 13,000 MT of structural steel. A notable feature of this project is the complex auditorium-style floor levels & its Curved shape, designed to optimize audience seating and sightlines, as well as the creation of custom trusses made from 300 mm diameter pipes, which took approx. 18 months to complete fabricating & erecting of approx. 13000MT of Structure steel.

STATUS

Scope of Work

Design and Engineering: Collaborating with structural engineers and architects to finalize the steel structure’s design, detailing all connections, dimensions, and material specifications.

Fabrication: Cutting, bending, welding, and assembling steel components, including beams, columns, and trusses.

Erection: On-site installation of the structural steel components, including setting up heavy lifting equipment and ensuring precise placement of elements.

Quality Control and Testing: Ensuring all fabricated components meet the prescribed quality standards, including non-destructive testing (NDT) for welds, material inspections, and dimensional checks.

Challenge

The Bapu Sabhagar Auditorium project presents a unique challenge due to its size, complexity, and specialized structural elements. However, with careful planning, expert execution, and a committed team, the project resulted in a world-class facility designed to host large-scale conferences and events. Through meticulous fabrication, precise erection, and adherence to safety and quality standards, this iconic structure has become a hallmark of Patna’s architectural landscape.

Fabrication Details

  • Primary Beams & Columns: These elements will form the core framework of the building and will be fabricated from I-beams, H-sections, and other forms based on the structural design.
  • Trusses Made from 300 mm Diameter Pipes: The fabrication of trusses using large-diameter pipes will involve specialized pipe bending techniques. The pipes will be bent to precise radii, followed by welding the pipe sections into the required truss configuration. This process requires careful calculation of bending radii to ensure the pipes maintain their strength and stability.
  • Secondary Elements: Fabrication & erection of additional structural members such as braces, cross beams, purlins, and girts.

Bending of 300mm Diameter Pipes

Given the large diameter of the pipes (300mm), bending them into truss shapes requires advanced equipment –hydraulic bending presses. Special attention were paid to:

  • Pipe Bending Radius: The minimum radius of the pipe bends were calculated based on the material’s specifications and the required load-bearing capacity of the trusses.
  • Welding and Joining: After bending, the pipe sections are welded together to form the trusses. Precision welding techniques were used to ensure the structural integrity of each truss, with non-destructive testing carried out to verify the strength of each joint.

Erection Process

  • Site Preparation: Prior to erection, the construction site was prepared by setting up a robust foundation and a stable crane assembly. Temporary structures were needed to ensure the stability of components during the installation process.
  • Sequencing of Erection: The erection process was carefully planned to minimize downtime and ensure safety. The process began with the installation of the primary load-bearing components (columns and main beams), followed by the installation of secondary elements and trusses.
    • Heavy Lifting: Cranes and other lifting equipment were used to handle the heavy steel components. The large trusses and beams were lifted and placed in their final positions with the utmost care to ensure proper alignment and safety.
